Labor Day Weekend will feel different

Tanglewood is celebrating its 75th season as summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. But the summer season just won’t be the same for jazz fans in western Massachusetts.

There will be no silver anniversary for Tanglewood’s  long-running Labor Day Weekend jazz festival.

Rather than hold the jazz festival as the venue’s end-of-summer event, the BSO is including six jazz and jazz-related concerts during its season.

The Tanglewood concerts include Diana Krall on June 23, trumpeter Chris Botti on August 5, the Christian McBride trio with Christian Sands and and Ulysses Owens Jr. on August 19, and Chick Corea with vibes player Gary Burton and the Harlem String Quartet on August 26. Additionally, the Ébène String Quartet will juxtapose a Mozart and Tchaikovsky set with jazz selections arranged by ensemble members on August 16.

The 24th annual Tanglewood Jazz Festival was held Labor Day Weekend 2011. Only time and perhaps an improved economy will determine if there will ever be another in this bucolic setting in Lenox, Massachusetts. While it will be missed by many, at least jazz is scattered throughout the two-month-plus season.
