An evening of artful exuberance

In the right hands, Dixieland jazz is more of a feeling than a specific repertoire. It’s not what you play, so much as how you play it. Bob Leary’s sextet closed out the Charlotte County Jazz Society’s 2016-17 concert season exploring a wide array of vintage material that had toes a-tapping.

Trad jazz with a few twists

Clarinetist Bud Leeds brought musicians together from near and far - in this case, mostly far - for his annual South County Jazz Club matinee performance on Sunday, March 5 in Venice FL. His "Trad Jazz Ensemble" featured players who are right at home in the traditional jazz/Dixieland genres, but the afternoon touched on more recent music as well.

Digging deep into the roots of jazz

Skip Conkling

No matter your style preference, it is good once in a while for all jazz listeners to go back to the source material - the roots, if you will. Drummer Skip Conkling's band, Skip's Dixie Mix, provided the itinerary on Thursday, February 25, and had toes a-tapping at a South County Jazz Club matinee concert at the Venice Art Center.

His septet rolled through an extensive series of Dixieland tunes, but Conkling also made space for a riveting boogie-woogie spotlight for pianist Bill Buchman. The Sarasota-area band included Conkling, Buchman, Bill Carmichael on clarinet and soprano sax, Marv Luckett on trombone, Joe Miller on trumpet and cornet, Mike Evans on banjo and vocals, and John Dewitt on bass.

Dixieland jazz in top form - and with a few twists

How do you keep Dixieland jazz from being mere repertory music? Trombonist Herb Bruce's approach is one way to go. As presented by his Herbicide Jazz Band, the music is solid, with clever, intricate arrangements. And the band takes the stage with good humor. Lots of it. 

The players take the music seriously, but don't take each other too seriously. That personable approach helps draw in the audience for what's a fun ride. Such was the case, Monday, April 13, when Herbicide closed out the Charlotte County Jazz Society's 2014-15 concert season with a Dixieland Night concert at the Cultural Center Theater in Port Charlotte FL. In short, you could call it syncopated swing with a sense of humor.

The Bobby van Deusen show

When you’ve got a piano marvel in the house, you wind him up and let him go – and then go along for the ride. That was the case Thursday when clarinetist Bud Leeds brought his quartet to the Venice (FL) Art Center as part of the South County Jazz Club’s matinee concert series.

The marvel was Bobby van Deusen, a ragtime and stride specialist who lives in Pensacola but was in the area for this weekend’s Suncoast Jazz Classic. Van Deusen will perform at the weekend-long trad jazz event in Clearwater with the Barbary Coast Dixieland Show Band. 

Bassist Don Mopsick, a 19-year member of the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and drummer Tony Martin, who had worked with van Deusen previously in New Orleans, rounded out Leeds’ band.
