Jazz on this holiday weekend’s Record Store Day

The record collectors among you who can’t resist going out on Black Friday should stop by your local independent record shops. They need the business far more than any of the big box stores. Plus, it is the Black Friday edition of Record Store Day.

It is the day record stores across the United States sell exclusive, limited-edition releases. Record Store Day started as an April event, but added a second event two years ago that falls on the day after Thanksgiving. The tradition continues this year on November 29th.

 This year’s jazz-related offerings:

Three different classic Miles Davis LPs in limited-edition, individually-numbered audiophile vinyl that are presented in the original mono format from Columbia / Legacy. These three Davis audiophile LPs will be sold exclusively through indie stores until January 6.

They are 1959’s classic Kind of Blue, Miles & Monk at Newport, recorded in 1958 and 1963 respectively, and Jazz Track. The latter is a vinyl reissue of two under-rated Miles Davis sessions. Side One of Jazz Track consists of the Miles Davis Quintet's soundtrack for the French film “L'Ascenseuer Pour l'Echafaud. Side Two includes highlights from the Miles Davis Sextet's May 26, 1958 studio session with Bill Evans, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. This recording, made on the trumpeter’s 32nd birthday, features a stunning version of “Stella By Starlight.”

The Blue Note label’s jazz-related contribution to RSD features a twist on the edgier music of pianist Robert Glasper’s Robert Glasper Experiment.

Porter Chops Glasper is a 10-inch red vinyl record that features two exclusive remixes from D12 member Mr. Porter (aka Denuan Porter) an avid Glasper fan and beatmaster who works with rapper Eminem.
