It
is the day record stores across the United States sell exclusive,
limited-edition releases. Record Store Day started as an April event, but added
a second event two years ago that falls on the day after Thanksgiving. The
tradition continues this year on November 29th.
Three different classic Miles Davis LPs in limited-edition, individually-numbered
audiophile vinyl that are presented in the original mono format from Columbia /
Legacy. These
three Davis audiophile LPs will be sold exclusively through indie stores until January
6.
They are 1959’s classic Kind of
Blue, Miles & Monk at Newport, recorded in 1958 and 1963 respectively, and Jazz
Track. The latter is a vinyl reissue of two under-rated Miles Davis
sessions. Side One of Jazz Track consists of the Miles Davis Quintet's soundtrack for the French film “L'Ascenseuer
Pour l'Echafaud. Side Two includes highlights from the Miles Davis Sextet's May
26, 1958 studio session with Bill Evans, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley.
This recording, made on the trumpeter’s 32nd birthday, features a
stunning version of “Stella By Starlight.”
The Blue Note label’s
jazz-related contribution to RSD features a twist on the edgier music of
pianist Robert Glasper’s Robert Glasper Experiment.
