The tenor player Tim McCall was his roommate at North Texas. Without getting into to details one of Dans most endearing qualities was loyalty. If you became his friend he always had your back. I could site a dozen occasions with a dozen guys! He was a walking encyclopedia of jazz. I used to confirm and double check things with him.<br />Musically and personally I loved him like a brother! We had a steady couple nights in Naples, and a steady for years in Ft Myers. So we were musical brothers. As a pal I loved him. We both loved playing jazz, we both loved finding the best food joints (we had a legendary bar-b-que hang), we both loved sports and we both played high school b ball). Dan was just a good hearted sweetheart, everyone loved him. His seriousness towards passing on a positive influence to SW FL youth was unmatched! Man, these killer young players I’d meet on the band stand would tell me Dan was their first and major influence! I’d call Dan and say man I worked Again with one of your protégés and the cat was a mother!!! I didn’t find out about Dans influence by someone telling me, I found out about it peacemeal on the bandstand! If you have to go such as Dan did and I’m crushed and deeply deeply saddened, he did leave an unmatched legacy that will live on through kids up to professionals! And most importantly he was and is and shall be remembered lovinginly for a long long time. Miss and love you my pal Dan!
